The Background

Established in 1861, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has played a key role in the development of modern technology and science, ranking it among the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. The MIT Sloan School of Management is the business school of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. MIT Sloan offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree programs, as well as Executive Education.

First Steps

MIT Sloan School of Management put together an internal Committee in response to the events of June 2020 and aligned Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals to 2021. The Committee and OER leadership sought assistance from a professional to talk through implementation. MIT Sloan School of Management was drawn to Yardstick because of our academic expertise and Black ownership, and the partnership was ultimately solidified because of Yardstick’s unique intersection of experience with education and corporate. The engagement was a 3 Month Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Assessment.

The Tactics and Results

Yardstick first Audited and Assessed relevant data and documents of the MIT Sloan School of Management Office of Executive relations, some of which included Job Descriptions, Employee Demographics, Culture Feedback Data, Marketing Materials, Talent Practices, KPIs, Performance Management Processes, and employee interviews. After Auditing and Assessing, the Yardstick designated two weeks per recommendation to build out tangible action items with the team. This intentional dedication enabled the MIT Sloan School of Management team to walk away with clear steps fueled by over 30 action items catered to their people and culture.

Yardstick provided over 20 hours of intensive DEI consulting support and guidance to MIT Sloan Admissions leaders. They assisted in the development of potential internal programs, external campaigns, and prepare OER leadership to better respond to a host of other potentially sensitive changes. From there, the Yardstick team tailored an Inclusive Hiring training to tangible needs. The team worked with leadership on change management ideation, highlighting foundational strengths and areas of concern through discoveries and ending with targeted development areas.
